Google's September spam update ended October 8 — compare September 24 to October 8 before acting on drops

2026-10-08Credibility: High 中文版 →

Google's Search Status Dashboard records the September 2026 spam update as complete on October 8, 2026, after it began on September 24, 2026 at 09:15 PDT. Our September 29 brief noted the rollout could run up to two weeks; it finished in about 13 days and 16 hours, so the window for judging its effect is now closed and dated.

Credibility: High. The dates come from Google's own dashboard entry, which anyone can open. The rank-tracker observation is SEOmonitor's own reading (a vendor claim, not a Google statement), and the Search Console delay is a single SE Roundtable report that Google had not commented on.

  • The dashboard entry (status.search.google.com/incidents/XhUDXP7A67iHCD2kmbVu) says the update 'applies globally and to all languages' and that 'the rollout was complete as of October 8, 2026.'
  • Recorded start 2026-09-24 09:15 PDT; recorded end 2026-10-08 01:00 PDT. Search Engine Journal reports that the three earlier spam updates in 2026 each finished in under three days.
  • SEOmonitor reports that rank trackers showed sudden changes from September 26, 2026 that searchers did not see, which it attributes to incomplete or inaccurate data Google returned to automated tools. It says real update effects usually persist over several consecutive days and show up in impressions and clicks.
  • SE Roundtable reported on October 11, 2026 that the Search Console Performance report was more than 64 hours delayed, later down to 44 hours, with no Google comment at that time.
OPERATOR TAKE

For business owners and marketing leads, the question 'did the spam update hit us?' now has a fixed answer window: September 24 to October 8, 2026. If clicks fell inside that window and stayed down afterward, the update is a candidate cause. If only a rank tracker moved, particularly around September 26, treat it as a direction signal to confirm against Search Console clicks, not a verdict. The dashboard entry describes no specific target, so a drop alone does not show that a site was judged as spam. Because the Performance report has been lagging, the most recent days may still be incomplete.

Actions:

1. Ask your web team to export Search Console Performance clicks and impressions by page for September 24 to October 8, 2026 and for the 14 days before it, and mark the pages that fell in both clicks and impressions.

2. Line up your AI-visibility tracker's movement from September 26 against those Search Console clicks, and report the tracker as the explanation of direction and Search Console as the confirmation.

3. Hold content rewrites made in reaction to a drop until Search Console data for October 8 onward is complete, and record the decision and its date in the client file.
