What Is an AI Overview? What Google's AI Answers Mean for Your Brand's Demand
AI Overviews already sit above the blue links on one in five Google searches, citing sources on 96% of informational queries and 10% of local ones. What the feature is, how it picks who it names, and what that means for your demand.
Key Takeaways
- An AI Overview (also written AIO) is the AI-generated answer Google places above the classic blue links, written at query time from a handful of web pages it cites alongside the text. Ahrefs' study of 146,122,391 desktop search results pages (SERPs), on September 2025 data, found them on 20.5% of all SERPs, and on 57.9% of question queries against 15.5% of non-question ones.
- AI Overviews are intent-selective, so the feature matters far more to some businesses than others. Our own crawl of 500 queries, 100 in each of five intent categories, collected April 2026, found Google AI Overview citing sources on 96% of informational and 90% of health-and-money queries, but 32% of transactional and 10% of local ones.
- Getting cited is not the same as ranking, and the published studies disagree because they count different things. Ahrefs found 37.9% of cited URLs also ranking top 10 across 863,000 keyword SERPs, published March 2026; SE Ranking reports 92.36%, but counts domains rather than pages, on November 2024 data. Five measurements sit side by side below.
- The clicks an overview costs are concentrated at the very top of the page. Ahrefs' February 2026 update, comparing Search Console data for 300,000 keywords between December 2023 and December 2025, found a 58% lower average clickthrough rate for the top-ranking page where an overview appeared, easing to 19.4% at position ten.
- For a brand this is a demand question before it is a traffic question. The overview decides which companies a buyer meets while building a shortlist, so the metric that moves first is whether an answer names you, not whether a page ranked.
What is an AI Overview, and is AIO the same thing?
An AI Overview is Google's AI-written answer at the top of the search results page, generated at the moment you search and linked to the sources it drew from, and AIO is simply the shorthand for it, not a different product. Google's own help documentation describes it as an "AI-generated snapshot with key information and links to dig deeper," shown "when our systems determine that generative AI can be especially helpful."
AIO, AI Overview and AI Overviews all name the same product, and the acronym causes more confusion than the feature does, partly because AIO also means "all-in-one" elsewhere in software. Google announced it on 10 May 2023 as an experiment in Search Labs called SGE, short for Search Generative Experience. At I/O on 14 May 2024 it dropped the Labs framing and said AI Overviews "will begin rolling out to everyone in the U.S.", powered by "a new Gemini model customized for Google Search." No rename was ever announced; the old name simply stopped appearing. It has scaled since: Google claimed "more than 200 countries and territories and in more than 40 languages" in May 2025, its support page listed 249 countries and 98 languages when we counted on 1 September 2026, and Sundar Pichai told I/O in May 2026 that the feature had "over 2.5 billion monthly active users."
Takeaway
SGE was the 2023 experiment; AI Overviews is the shipped product; AIO is the shorthand.
What does an AI Overview look like, and when does Google show one?
An AI Overview sits directly under the search box, above the first classic result, with three parts (a written answer, links to the pages it drew on, and a control to expand it or move into AI Mode), and Google shows one when its systems judge a query is better served by a generated answer than a list of links, which happens far more often on question-shaped searches. On desktop the cited sources sit as cards beside the text; on mobile they appear as inline links and a source row underneath.
Google publishes no trigger rule, so trigger behaviour has to be measured, and two patterns hold. The first is question shape, measured by Ahrefs across 146,122,391 desktop SERPs collected in September 2025. The second is intent, measured in our own April 2026 crawl of 500 queries.
That gap is the practical read. If your buyers arrive on comparison and how-does-this-work questions, an AI Overview already sits between you and them on most of those searches. If they arrive ready to buy, or looking for a nearby provider, it touches a tenth to a third of them and your attention belongs elsewhere.
How does Google decide which sources an AI Overview cites?
Google retrieves passages rather than whole pages, writes an answer over them, and links where they came from. That one mechanic explains most of what follows: a page can rank well and contribute nothing quotable, and a page can be cited for one paragraph while the rest goes unread.
How much classic ranking still matters is contested. Five published measurements answer the question, and they answer different versions of it: their headline numbers run from 16.7% to 92.36% because no two of them count the same thing. Read them side by side rather than averaged.
| Study | Sample, as the study states it | What it counted | Finding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs, 2 March 2026 | 863,000 keyword SERPs, 4 million AI Overview URLs | The same URL cited and ranking top 10 on the same query | 37.9% |
| Ahrefs, 21 July 2025 | 1.9 million citations from 1 million AI Overviews | The same, eight months earlier | 76.10% |
| Semrush, 21 July 2025 | 5,000 randomly selected keywords | Cited URL in Google's top 10 | 67% at URL level, 86% at domain level |
| SE Ranking, December 2024 | 18,767 AIO-triggering keywords out of 100,013, collected 19 November 2024 | Overview linked to at least one top-10 domain, and separately whether cited links were top-10 pages | 92.36% at domain level; 39.1% of all cited links (50,062 of 127,985) were top-10 pages |
| BrightEdge, 18 September 2025 | 9 industries tracked May 2024 to September 2025 | Overlap with organic rankings at any position | Rose from 32.3% to 54.5%; only 16.7% of citations came from top-10 results |
Three differences explain the spread. The unit: SE Ranking's 92.36% asks only whether a cited domain appears anywhere in the top 10, a far easier bar than the page-level test, which asks whether the very same URL is both cited and ranking. The rank window: BrightEdge counts overlap across the whole first hundred positions and says most of the growth came from pages ranking 21 to 100, which is why its top-10 share is the lowest number here. And the dates span fifteen months.
Even the page-level readings disagree, and not along a timeline. Semrush's 67% and Ahrefs' 76.10% are both from July 2025 and sit close together, while SE Ranking's 39.1%, on November 2024 data, sits within a point and a half of Ahrefs' 37.9% from March 2026. That rules out reading the spread as a decline over time. Ahrefs reads its own fall as Google "relying less on the direct search results and more on the sources showing up in fan out query SERPs," and it improved its parsing between its two studies, so treat that pair as two readings rather than one trend line.
Our own crawl measures a related thing and lands lower still: of 6,576 pages that returned usable HTML, 985, about 15%, both ranked in Google's top 10 and were cited by an AI engine. That counts pages winning both systems rather than the share of citations that rank, which is why it sits beside the table and not in it.
What survives all five: ranking helps and does not decide. Every one of them leaves a large share of cited pages outside the top ten, from about a quarter on Ahrefs' July 2025 reading to more than four fifths on BrightEdge's, and the width of that spread is itself the finding.
Structured data is not the gate people assume, either. In our crawl of 5,090 AI-cited URLs, only 48.4% of the 2,355 pages Google AI Overview cited carried any schema markup, below Perplexity's 59.5% across 2,870 pages. Schema helps a machine parse a page. It does not buy a citation.
AI Overview vs featured snippet vs People Also Ask: what is actually different?
AI Overviews, featured snippets and People Also Ask look alike and do different jobs. A featured snippet lifts text verbatim from one page, and People Also Ask does the same for each expanded question. An AI Overview writes new text over passages from several pages at once, which is why it can name a brand that no single page names.
| AI Overview | Featured snippet | People Also Ask | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How the answer is made | Written at query time from retrieved passages | Copied verbatim from one page | Copied verbatim, one page per question |
| Sources shown | Several, as links or cards | One | One per expanded question |
| Position | Above everything | Usually position zero | Mid-page block |
| What it asks of your page | A passage that stands alone, names its subject, and carries its own facts | A passage that matches the question format closely | The same, per sub-question |
| Where the risk sits | Your facts can be restated without your name attached | Your text is quoted, with attribution | Your text is quoted, with attribution |
The last row is the one that matters commercially. A snippet quotes you; an overview may summarise you, and summarising is where attribution gets lost.
What do AI Overviews do to your traffic, and to your demand?
AI Overviews take clicks from the top of the results, and they take them unevenly. Ahrefs' February 2026 update compared aggregated Google Search Console data across 300,000 keywords, 150,000 with an AI Overview and 150,000 informational queries without one, between December 2023 and December 2025. Where an overview appeared, the top-ranking page carried a 58% lower average clickthrough rate. The loss decays down the page:
Two cautions for anyone modelling that. The widely quoted 34.5% figure is the same study on an older window, published April 2025 and superseded by its own authors, so it is not a second finding. And a flat percentage applied across all ten positions understates the top of the page by a factor of three.
The same missing click, two accounts
What the dashboard shows
A missing click. No referral, no session, no attributed conversion.
What actually happened
The buyer read an overview naming four vendors, including yours, and clicked none of them. All four are now on their shortlist.
A dashboard records the missing click and none of the rest. That is why we treat answer engine work as pre-sale trust building rather than click buying: the value of a citation is rarely the visit, it is that the buyer arrives already persuaded because a source they trusted named you while they were deciding.
So the reporting question turns around. Rank tells you a page is eligible. What you want to know is which of the four outcomes our AEO explainer describes applies on the questions your buyers ask: named with a link, named without a link, described without being named, or absent. Those are leading indicators, and they move months before pipeline does.
The honest counterpoint
The largest numbers in circulation are wrong. Graphite's January 2026 analysis of the top 40,000 largest US sites, using Similarweb data and comparing February to December 2024 against January to November 2025, found organic search traffic down 2.5% year on year, against a widely repeated claim of a 25% to 60% collapse. Graphite is clear that the aggregate hides the distribution: the losses sat with sites ranked 100 to 10,000 by size, the top 10 averaged a 1.6% gain, and news, health, cooking and entertainment each fell more than 10%. Clicks moved, unevenly, and nobody has published where they went.
Can AI Overviews be wrong?
Documented failure modes
AI Overviews can be wrong, and the failure modes are documented. WordStream put 45 PPC questions to five AI tools in a test published July 2025 and updated March 2026, and Google AI Overviews got 12 wrong, 26%, more than any other tool in the set. That is one author grading 45 questions, and WordStream notes that some are subjective, so read it as a signal rather than an error rate. The failure modes travel further than the percentage: overviews miss sarcasm, and they cite dead URLs.
For a brand there is a second edge that user-facing coverage misses. An overview can be wrong about you: attributing a competitor's pricing model to your product, describing a feature you retired, or answering a question about your category by naming four rivals and not you. None of that shows in a rankings report, because no ranking changed. It shows up as a sales call that opens from the wrong premise, which is the case for reading what the answers say about your brand rather than only what position your pages hold.
What should a brand do about AI Overviews?
A brand's first three moves on AI Overviews run in order: find out whether the feature is in your path, find out what it says about you, then rebuild what should be quotable.
- Establish whether AI Overviews are even in your path. Search the twenty questions your buyers actually ask. Given the 96% versus 10% spread between informational and local intent in our crawl, this takes an afternoon and can end the project honestly.
- Check whether you are already being cited, and what the answers say about you. Our free AEO audit and AI visibility tracker run this without a call.
- Rebuild the pages that should be quotable so a passage can be lifted from them intact. Self-contained answers, the subject named in the sentence rather than carried by a pronoun, facts and figures in the paragraph rather than a chart image.
The full method sits in the companion guide, how to rank in Google AI Overviews, built on the structural targets from the same crawl. For the wider picture, AEO vs GEO vs SEO separates the three disciplines, measuring AEO covers reporting, and what drives AI citations breaks down SE Ranking's analysis of 129,000 domains.

FAQ: What Is an AI Overview?
Is Google AI Overview trustworthy?
Treat it as a well-read starting point rather than a verified answer. WordStream tested 45 PPC questions across five AI tools and found Google AI Overviews wrong on 12 of them, about 26%, in a test published July 2025 and updated March 2026. Google shows the sources beside the answer for this reason, and its help page tells users to "click the links to supporting information from the web" before relying on it.
Can I turn off the AI Overview on Google?
Not as a setting. Google's help documentation states that "AI Overviews are a core Google Search feature, like knowledge panels. Features cannot be turned off." It does offer a workaround for individual searches: "you can select the Web filter after you perform a search. This filter displays only text-based links without features like AI Overviews."
Is AI Overview the same as ChatGPT?
No. Both write answers with a language model, but they run on different indexes and cite different pages. In our 500-query crawl, Google AI Overview and ChatGPT did not share a single citation across 6,083 cited URLs, and 94.2% of cited pages appeared in exactly one engine. Winning one does not win the other.
Why is Google giving me an AI Overview?
Because your query looked like a question Google's systems judged an AI answer would serve better than a list of links. Question queries trigger overviews most: Ahrefs' November 2025 study of 146,122,391 desktop SERPs found AI Overviews on 57.9% of question queries against 15.5% of non-question ones, and 20.5% of SERPs overall.
Why am I not getting an AI Overview in Google?
Most often the query is not the type Google shows one for. Transactional and local searches trigger far fewer: our April 2026 crawl found Google AI Overview citing sources on 32% of transactional and 10% of local queries, against 96% of informational ones. Availability also varies: Google lists the countries, territories and languages AI Overviews are live in on its help page, and publishes no headline total.
What is AIO in Google search?
AIO is shorthand for AI Overview, the same feature. It is worth confirming which AIO a colleague means, because the acronym is also used for "all-in-one" in unrelated software categories.
Is Google AI Overview the same as SGE?
Effectively yes. Search Generative Experience was the opt-in Search Labs experiment Google launched in May 2023; AI Overviews is the shipped feature that replaced it, released to United States searchers in May 2024. Content written for SGE-era guidance is describing the same product under an old name, though the trigger and citation behaviour has moved since.
Does AI Overview reduce traffic to websites?
Yes, and unevenly. Ahrefs' February 2026 study of 300,000 keywords found a 58% lower average clickthrough rate for the top-ranking page when an AI Overview is present, easing to 19.4% at position ten. The aggregate picture is milder: Graphite's January 2026 analysis of the top 40,000 largest US sites, using Similarweb data, put organic search traffic down 2.5% year on year. Both readings hold, because the loss concentrates on the queries and the positions where overviews actually appear.
Can I opt my website out of being cited in AI Overviews?
Only by using preview controls that also cost you visibility elsewhere. Google's AI features documentation states that to limit what Search shows from your pages you "use nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, or noindex controls", which are tags your developer puts in a page's code. There is no separate AI Overview opt-out that leaves normal search results untouched.
How do I check if my brand appears in AI Overviews?
Run your buyers' real questions and read the answers, rather than checking rankings. Record four outcomes per question: named with a link, named without a link, described without being named, or absent. Our free AEO audit does the first pass, and our guide to measuring AEO covers how to report it to a board without overstating it.

A First Page Sage "2026" CTR benchmark and an SE Ranking four-word-query trigger rate were dropped for lacking a traceable primary this session.
