Your ChatGPT ad buys the slot, not the citation above it — only 3.63% of advertisers are also the source the answer quotes.

2026-08-10Credibility: Medium 中文版 →

Two systems are running inside the same ChatGPT answer, and they barely know each other. SE Ranking put more than 50,000 commercial-intent prompts across 20 niches through the model and published the results on August 10, 2026: 25.94% came back with a sponsored placement attached. Then look one line up, at the sources ChatGPT cited to build the answer the ad is sitting next to. Advertisers show up there 3.63% of the time. The advertiser's exact URL, the page the money was spent to send people to, appears in a citation 0.09% of the time.

The placement is loose as well. 14.35% of the ads didn't match the prompt they ran against, from 2.6% in Pets to over 50% in Relationships and News & Politics. Frequency swings hard by category, and it swings against Google. Healthcare prompts carried an ad 28.69% of the time in ChatGPT and 2.64% of the time in Google's AI Mode. News & Politics: 28.76% against 6.8%.

Credibility: MEDIUM — SE Ranking is an SEO/PPC tool vendor with a commercial interest in AI-search visibility topics, and this is a single study no one has replicated independently. The method is disclosed (50,000+ prompts, 20 niches) and Search Engine Land reported the topline number independently, but no second dataset has confirmed the figures.

Fact bullets:

  • Sponsored placements appeared on 25.94% of the 50,000+ commercial prompts sampled across 20 niches (SE Ranking, published August 10, 2026).
  • 14.35% of the ads shown were judged unrelated to the prompt they accompanied; the mismatch rate ranged from 2.6% (Pets) to over 50% (Relationships, News & Politics).
  • Only 3.63% of advertisers were also cited as an organic source in the same response; the advertiser's exact URL appeared in a citation just 0.09% of the time.
  • Ad frequency varies sharply by category and outpaces Google's AI Mode: Healthcare prompts carried ads 28.69% of the time in ChatGPT versus 2.64% in AI Mode; News & Politics 28.76% versus 6.8%.

OPERATOR TAKE

For business owners and marketing leads: ChatGPT ad spend and ChatGPT citation exposure are two separate budgets today.

The comfortable read of a 25.94% ad rate is that AI answers are turning into a media buy like any other, and that the visibility problem finally has a price on it. The 3.63% is the number that spoils that read. Paying to sit beside an answer does not make a brand likelier to be the thing the answer was built out of, and 0.09% on the exact advertised URL says the two systems are not quietly converging either. That can change, because ad products get tuned. None of this is an argument against buying the placement; it is an argument against expecting the citation to arrive with it. Today the two are decoupled, and a report that blends them into one AI-presence figure will describe a client's position wrongly in both directions.

Recommended actions:

1. If a client already runs ChatGPT ads, pull the campaign and check the same responses for the brand as a cited source. Score citation and paid placement on separate lines in the next report rather than folding them into one AI-visibility number.

2. Ask the web team whether the category pages already earning citations in Google AI Overviews are built to be quoted by ChatGPT too, passage by passage, each one standing on its own. Ad budget does not substitute for a page worth citing.

3. Warn clients in the high-mismatch categories (Relationships and News & Politics, where more than half the ads missed the prompt) that a competitor's sponsored slot next to their brand's answer may be an off-topic ad rather than ground actually lost. Keep the tracker's competitive numbers in the report and apply that discount when reading them.
