### Google now defaults eligible Shopify stores into checkout inside AI Mode and Gemini — a store that wants the sale on its own site has to switch it off
The checkout just moved into Google's answer, and the default decided it. Starting September 22, 2026, Google began telling merchants on Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)-integrated platforms, through Merchant Center, that "Your products are now eligible for native checkout" and that "Eligible products are automatically included." The notification covers purchases made "in AI Mode on Google Search, Gemini, and more." Search Engine Roundtable reported the rollout the same day, and two e-commerce operators, Menachem Ani and Nic McDonough, independently confirmed the switch is already live in Shopify admin under Sales channels > Agentic. That toggle is the only way out. A merchant who wants buyers to finish the purchase on the store's own site, and keep it out of Google Search, AI Mode and Gemini, has to find it and turn native checkout off. Google has not said whether it will notify merchants who never open the email. UCP-powered checkout itself is not new: it launched in February 2026. What changed on September 22 is the default.

Credibility: MEDIUM. Google's own Merchant Center email is the primary artifact and its text is directly quoted; corroborated by two independent named e-commerce operators showing the live UI toggle. Medium rather than High because there is no public Google Help Center doc or blog post confirming the auto-enable default; only merchant-facing email language relayed via one trade outlet.
Fact bullets:
- Google's Merchant Center notification, sent September 22, 2026, states verbatim: "Your products are now eligible for native checkout" and "Eligible products are automatically included."
- The feature applies to purchases made "in AI Mode on Google Search, Gemini, and more," per Google's notification text.
- Merchants on UCP-integrated platforms (confirmed live on Shopify) can disable it only by going to Shopify admin > Sales channels > Agentic and turning off native checkout.
- UCP-powered checkout first launched in February 2026 and was expanded to auto-enable status on September 22, 2026.

For brands selling through Shopify or any other UCP-connected catalog, Google has just made a checkout decision on their behalf. It spent February offering checkout inside its AI answers. In September it stopped asking. For every store whose team skims past a Merchant Center email, Google has now decided where the sale closes, and the store's own checkout, with its upsell, its email capture and its returns flow, is no longer part of that sale.
That is not automatically a loss. For a low-consideration product a shopper would buy on the first click, finishing the purchase in the answer may well convert better than a trip to the site, and a store that turns the toggle off by reflex could give up sales to protect a funnel that never earned them. The trouble is the other catalog: the one whose margin depends on the second item in the basket, or on the customer list the checkout builds. That store is now bypassed by default, and the first sign may be orders that arrive without the upsell attached. (A caveat that belongs on this brief too: the auto-enable rests on Google's merchant email as relayed by one trade outlet, with no public help doc yet, so confirm the setting in the admin before anyone plans around it.)
Recommended actions:
- This week, ask the client's e-commerce team to open Shopify admin > Sales channels > Agentic (or the matching UCP integration panel on their platform) and record whether native checkout is on.
- Decide with the client, product line by product line if the catalog is mixed, whether AI Mode and Gemini checkout stays on (a shorter path to purchase, with no on-site upsell or data capture) or buyers go back to the brand's own checkout, and write down why.
- If it stays on, have the client's finance team confirm how Google-processed AI Mode and Gemini orders reconcile with the existing order and tax systems before the next month-end close.
