ChatGPT owns 92% of the traffic chatbots send you — but Google's AI answers send more traffic than all chatbots combined

2026-07-06Credibility: Medium 中文版 →

Two numbers came out of the same report on July 6, 2026. Only one of them is being repeated. GEO agency Previsible published its *2026 State of AI Discovery Report*, written by co-founder and Chief Product Officer David Bell and built on 6.77 million LLM-referred sessions across 166 GA4 properties from November 2024 through May 2026. ChatGPT takes 92.4% of that trackable standalone-LLM referral traffic, and it is still gaining share. The figure now circulating as "ChatGPT = 92% of AI discovery" is the one Previsible's own report undercuts: AI discovery inside Google, meaning AI Overviews and AI Mode, sends more AI-influenced traffic than all standalone LLM assistants combined. The denominator is doing the work, and it is a narrow denominator. Search Engine Land covered the release the same week.

Credibility: MEDIUM. Named author and a checkable published report with a stated method, but this is a single-vendor convenience sample (166 properties inside Previsible's own network), the multi-outlet pickup is press-release syndication of one dataset rather than independent corroboration, and Previsible sells GEO services (incentive to foreground AI-discovery growth). GA4 also undercounts LLM referrals: dark/direct traffic and Google AI-surface visits attribute as organic, not as LLM referral.

  • 6.77M LLM-referred sessions across 166 GA4 properties, Nov 2024–May 2026; monthly volume grew from 65,249 (Nov 2024) to 644,478 (May 2026), a 9.9x rise. [Previsible]
  • ChatGPT: 92.4% share, 12.8x growth (47,606 to 610,910 monthly sessions). [Previsible]
  • Gemini second at ~2.8% (3.2x growth); Claude ~1.3% but grew 64x and passed Perplexity in March 2026; Perplexity down 61% from its March 2025 peak; Copilot down 96% from its August 2025 peak. [Previsible]
  • Report states Google AI Overviews + AI Mode drive more AI-influenced traffic than all LLM assistants combined; the 92.4% is scoped to standalone-LLM referrals only. [Previsible / Business Wire]
OPERATOR TAKE

For teams tracking AI visibility: this is a weighting instruction, not a coronation. If your AI share-of-voice dashboard gives every engine an equal row, ChatGPT has earned the anchor slot among the standalone assistants. But the awkward line for anyone building a ChatGPT-only plan sits in Previsible's own report: Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode still send more traffic than every assistant put together. Google AI is the surface to win. ChatGPT is where the trackable referrals land. You need both rows.

Don't zero out the small engines either. Gemini is the steady number two, and Claude sits around 1.3% in aggregate while growing 64x, with that growth concentrated in developer, technical-buyer and professional-services audiences. For a B2B-technical client, a 1.3% engine can still be the engine their actual buyer opens, which makes Claude visibility a segment signal worth its own line rather than a rounding error.

Then read the 92.4% for what it is: a share of trackable GA4 referrals, in a tracking layer that undercounts them. Pair the tracker's cross-engine direction with GA4 sessions and first-party citation tests before any single number goes in front of a client.

  • Reweight your AI-visibility tracker (WorkDuo / share-of-voice) so ChatGPT anchors the standalone-LLM view and Google AI Overviews / AI Mode sits at the top of the discovery priority list; record which surfaces you weighted and why.
  • Audit GA4 referral attribution this week, or ask your web team to: confirm ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini referrals are being captured, check how much AI traffic is landing in direct/organic, and note the undercount whenever you present tracker numbers.
  • Keep a dedicated Claude and Gemini line in technical and B2B client reports instead of dropping them, and flag Claude specifically for developer and professional-services audiences.
