Content syndication is common in business software marketing. An article is published on your site, then republished on a partner site, an industry publication or a content network. The reasoning is straightforward: more places, more reach.
The long standing worry is that the copy competes with the original. In traditional search that concern is real enough that an entire technical practice exists to manage it, telling search engines which version is the authoritative one.
Nobody knew whether AI engines behave the same way. If they favour whichever copy they happen to encounter, syndication would be actively diluting the visibility of the businesses doing it, and the technical safeguards built for search engines might not carry across.
How we tested it
Every page carries an optional declaration naming the authoritative version of itself. When a page is a republished copy, that declaration usually points at the original on another website. That gives us a direct way to identify copies.
We visited all 9,702 quoted pages and read that declaration on each one. Then we counted how many of the pages AI quoted were pointing at a different website as the real source, which is the signature of a syndicated copy being cited instead of the original.
We also tried a second approach, looking for the same article title appearing across multiple websites. That method turned out to be unreliable for this purpose, and it is worth explaining why, because it is a trap others will fall into.

The method that looked convincing and was not
Our second approach searched for identical article titles appearing on more than one website, on the assumption that duplicate titles indicate syndicated copies. It found 38 such titles.
Inspecting them showed the method does not work. The matches were not syndicated copies at all. They were separate companies that had independently given their pages the same generic name, because in any category several vendors will produce a page with the obvious title for that subject. Nothing had been republished. The titles simply converged.
