ASU Online Ranks #1 for “Online Degree Programs” — Yet AI Overviews Cite SNHU 3.7x More Often
ASU Online offers 400+ accredited online degrees and certificates, and search already rewards it: 29,920 ranking keywords in the US and the #1 result for “online degree programs.”
AI answers tell a different story. Across the Google AI Overview answers we tracked, snhu.edu is cited in 44,895 and asuonline.asu.edu in 12,257. When we asked ChatGPT for the best online bachelor’s programs, the best online MBAs and a forensic-science degree, ASU was named each time, yet every link went to third-party sites such as learn.org, research.com and gmac.com. Google’s AI Overview for the online MBA question left ASU out entirely.
The gap compounds. SNHU draws an estimated 6,643,296 monthly organic visits to ASU Online’s 741,901, and every AI answer that links a publisher instead of your site hands the shortlist framing to someone else. The foundation exists; the data shows exactly where the citations go instead.
| Domain | Ranked Keywords | Est. Traffic (ETV) | #1 Positions | #2-3 | #4-10 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| asuonline.asu.edu | 29,920 | 741,901 | 1,795 | 2,223 | 6,506 |
| ufonline.ufl.edu | 5,415 | 314,545 | 673 | 775 | 1,457 |
| snhu.edu | 117,705 | 6,643,296 | 5,693 | 12,785 | 33,055 |

Server-Rendered and Richly Marked Up — but Five H1 Tags on the Homepage and a 3.1s LCP
Implementation quality across rendering, page signals and structured data
Rendering & Bot Access: Crawlable, With Room on Load Speed
Mediumasuonline.asu.edu is built on Nuxt with server-side rendering, so program content is present in the raw HTML that AI crawlers read. That access is confirmed in practice: asuonline.asu.edu is cited in 12,257 tracked Google AI Overview answers. On load speed, the homepage records FCP 1.7s, LCP 3.1s and CLS 0.007, with a Lighthouse performance score of 68. LCP sits above Google's 2.5s “good” threshold. SNHU's homepage loads its largest element in 1.1s (performance 89); UF Online's in 7.1s (performance 43).
Load speed is a secondary factor for AI citation, but it is one of the few signals here where a competitor clearly leads.
| Signal | asuonline.asu.edu | ufonline.ufl.edu | snhu.edu |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rendering | Server-rendered (Nuxt) | Server-rendered (WordPress) | Server-rendered |
| Lighthouse performance | 68 | 43 | 89 |

| XML sitemap URLs | 1,153 | 128 pages + 164 posts | 1,609 |
Content Hierarchy & Signals: Homepage Headings Are Fragmented
MediumThe homepage carries five H1 tags: “You belong here” plus four statistic counters (“#1”, “Top 10”, “400+”, “119,300+”). A parser looking for the page's main topic gets five competing answers, and none of them says “online degrees.” The bachelor's degree listing, which ranks #4 for “accredited online bachelor's degree”, has 2 H2 sections against 6 on UF Online's equivalent and 19 on SNHU's. Titles, meta descriptions, canonicals and semantic main and nav elements are in place on all 6 ASU pages we sampled. A visible breadcrumb trail was not detected on the sampled ASU pages, while UF Online shows one on 4 and SNHU on 5 of 6 sampled pages.
| Signal (6 sampled pages) | asuonline.asu.edu | ufonline.ufl.edu | snhu.edu |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single H1 on homepage | ✗ 5 H1 tags | ⚠ 2 H1 tags | ✓ 1 |

| Visible breadcrumbs | ✗ 0 of 6 detected | ✓ 4 of 6 | ✓ 5 of 6 |
Structured Data: Course and FAQ Markup Lead the Set; Site-Level Markup Not Detected
LowASU Online's structured data is the most education-specific in this comparison: Course and CourseInstance markup on both program pages, FAQPage markup on the FAQ hub and both program pages, NewsArticle markup on the blog post and EducationalOrganization markup on every page sampled. Two gaps remain. WebSite and SearchAction markup was not detected on any of the 6 ASU pages, while UF Online carries it on all 6. BreadcrumbList markup is present on 4 of 6 ASU pages but not on the homepage or the blog article. SNHU pages were fetched with a non-browser client and returned no structured data; that result may be client-specific, so snhu.edu is marked unconfirmed.

SNHU's Online MBA Page Runs 7,540 Words; ASU Online's Runs 1,281
Content depth and structured content across comparable pages
Program Pages Carry a Fraction of SNHU's Text
HighAcross the 6 comparable pages, SNHU's program pages are 3.7x (computer science: 6,241 vs 1,695 words) and 5.9x (MBA: 7,540 vs 1,281 words) the length of ASU Online's, with 19 to 20 H2 sections against ASU's 7 to 9. UF Online's pages are closer in size to ASU's. ASU Online leads on the FAQ hub (4,716 words). Program pages are the pages that category and long-tail AI answers name ASU for, and on those prompts the linked sources were third-party pages rather than asuonline.asu.edu.
ASU's image counts are in line with competitors. Images support image search and visual results; what they need here is the surrounding text structure that gives AI engines something to quote.

FAQ Coverage Is an ASU Online Advantage
Bright SpotASU Online has the deepest question-and-answer content of the three: a 4,716-word FAQ hub with 63 question headings, plus FAQ blocks with FAQPage markup on both sampled program pages. ChatGPT cited the FAQ hub directly when describing ASU Online. UF Online's admissions FAQ (3,237 words) showed no FAQPage markup in our crawl, and SNHU's FAQ page is 1,043 words. The asset exists; it is currently doing its work on branded questions, where the category and program-comparison questions are where citations are lost.

Content Mix: SNHU's Reach Comes From Articles, ASU Online's From Program Pages
HighAmong each domain's top 150 keywords by traffic, SNHU's newsroom articles account for an estimated 3,535,715 of 3,870,632 monthly visits, on topics as broad as motivational quotes, “what is AI” and what a counselor does. ASU Online's top 150 draw an estimated 460,480 visits, led by undergraduate program pages (143,779) and graduate program pages (100,448); its online-learning-tips articles contribute 60,771. The same split shows up in AI answers: snhu.edu is cited in 44,895 tracked AI Overview answers, asuonline.asu.edu in 12,257 and ufonline.ufl.edu in 3,399. ASU Online's 314 online-learning-tips articles already earn citations (its “how to become a pathologist” guide is cited in the AI Overview for “pathologist”, a query with 201,000 monthly AI search volume), so the format works; the scale differs.
