Google's AI Overviews cover 83% of US branded searches, up from 61% in July — read the one about your brand

2026-10-02Credibility: Medium 中文版 →

Summary. Type a company's name into Google and, more often than not, the first thing on the page is a paragraph Google wrote. Ahrefs crawled 232.8 million US desktop results between July and September 2026 and published the count on 2026-10-02 (author Ryan Law). On 2026-09-29, 83% of branded searches showed an AI Overview, and 76.2% of those Overviews sat at position one. The 83% is a single-day reading. The steadier line is the monthly rate, which climbed from 61.3% in July to 73.3% in September. Exposure is uneven by brand. Of the 100 names in Interbrand's Best Global Brands 2025, tracked at 14 weekly checkpoints, 63 showed an AI Overview by 2026-09-30, which leaves 37 of the world's best-known brands without one.

What the Overviews say rests on much less data. Where Ahrefs could see the full text (57 Overviews), Wikipedia was cited in 71.9%, YouTube in 38.6% and LinkedIn in 22.8%. Competitors barely appear: 2 of 58 analysable answers (3.4%) discussed them explicitly.

Credibility: MEDIUM. We read the Ahrefs study directly. The headline rate rests on 232.8 million crawls, but the citation and competitor breakdowns rest on 57 and 58 AI Overviews, which is small. Ahrefs sells AI-visibility tracking (Brand Radar), so it has a commercial interest in the topic. The data covers US desktop only. No second outlet corroborated the numbers.

OPERATOR TAKE

For brand owners and marketing leads, the results page for your own company name now opens, more often than not, with a paragraph Google wrote about you. That page used to be the one a brand could mostly script with its own site and sitelinks. If the 83% reading holds in your market, most people who type your name read Google's summary of you first, and 76.2% of the time that summary sits at the top. Two limits apply before anyone redraws a plan. The data is US desktop only, so your market and device mix may run differently. The source shares also come from only 57 Overviews, so treat Wikipedia's 71.9% as indicative until a larger sample confirms it.

The most useful number in the study may be the small one. Only 2 of 58 analysable answers discussed competitors, so in this sample the Overview mostly talks about you. The practical risk is accuracy: whether the paragraph describing your company is current, and which pages it drew on. Brands with no Overview yet, like 37 of Interbrand's 100, have a different question, which is whether that lasts. A tracker's trend line tells you when the page moved. A dated live check tells you what it actually said. Run them together, because a trend line with no dated baseline cannot show what changed on the page.

Actions this week

1. Ask your SEO or web team to run your 20 most important branded queries (brand name, brand plus pricing, brand plus reviews, brand versus a named competitor) on a US desktop browser, and log whether an AI Overview appears and which sources it cites.

2. Update anything out of date on your YouTube channel description and LinkedIn company page, and request corrections to your Wikipedia entry through the article's talk page. These were the three most-cited external domains in the study's sample.

3. Put the date and result of the check in your reporting pack, and repeat it monthly alongside your AI-visibility tracker, so every movement has a dated baseline to be measured against.
